ELEMENTS OF COMPUTER NETWORK


A computer network is a highly sophisticated system strategically designed to interconnect multiple nodes, creating a dynamic framework that enables seamless communication and facilitates the efficient sharing of information and resources among its constituent elements.   1. 1. Computers:
    At the heart of a computer network are the digital entities known as computers. These versatile devices possess the capability to accept input data, process it using predefined algorithms and data structures, and generate meaningful output. In the context of a network, computers play a pivotal role in facilitating data interchange and adopting a distributed programming model for parallel processing. Their functionalities extend beyond mere data processing to include tasks such as data storage, transformation, and retrieval, contributing significantly to the overall network dynamics.

 

  1. 2. Transmission Medium:
    The transmission medium is the means through which data is sent from one location to another. Signals, representing data, are transmitted as electromagnetic energy through mediums such as vacuum, air, or other channels. There are two types of transmission mediums: wired (Twisted Pair Cable, Coaxial Cable, Optical Fiber Cable) and wireless (Radiowaves, Microwaves, Infrared).

 

  1. 3. Protocols:
    Protocols are defined rules governing communication between network devices. They include mechanisms for device identification, connection establishment, and formatting rules for packaging data into transmitted and received messages. Protocols are categorized into Internet Protocols, Wireless Network Protocols, and Network Routing Protocols.

 

  1. 4. Network Software:
    Network software is a fundamental element for any network, aiding administrators in deployment, management, and monitoring. Traditional networks relied on hardware with embedded software, such as routers and switches. However, emerging technologies like Software-Defined Networking (SDN) separate software from hardware, enhancing adaptability to the dynamic nature of computer networks.
